In marine engineering, MGPS stands for Marine Growth Prevention System. The system is installed in the seawater cooling systems of ships, oil rigs and other marine structures to prevent the growth of marine organisms such as barnacles, mussels and algae on the surfaces of pipes, seawater filters and other equipment. MGPS uses an electric current to create a small electric field around the metal surface of the device, preventing marine life from attaching and growing on the surface. This is done to prevent equipment from corroding and clogging, resulting in reduced efficiency, increased maintenance costs and potential safety hazards.
