Seawater Desalination is the process of converting saltwater into drinkable freshwater, mainly achieved through the following technical principles:

1. Reverse osmosis (RO): RO is currently the most widely used seawater desalination technology. The principle is to utilize the characteristics of a semi permeable membrane and apply pressure to allow saltwater to pass through the membrane. Water molecules can pass through the membrane, while salts and other impurities dissolved in water are blocked on one side of the membrane. In this way, the water that has passed through the membrane becomes fresh water. Reverse osmosis technology can effectively remove dissolved salts, heavy metals, and organic matter from water.

2. Multi stage flash evaporation (MSF): Multi stage flash evaporation technology utilizes the rapid evaporation characteristics of seawater at low pressure. The seawater is first heated to a certain temperature, and then “flashed” in multiple evaporation chambers by reducing pressure. At each stage, the evaporated water vapor is condensed and collected to form fresh water, while the remaining concentrated saltwater continues to circulate in the system for processing.

3. Multi effect distillation (MED): Multi effect distillation technology also utilizes the principle of evaporation. Seawater is heated in multiple heaters, causing it to evaporate into water vapor. The water vapor is then cooled in the condenser to form fresh water. Unlike multi-stage flash evaporation, multi effect distillation improves energy efficiency by utilizing the heat released during the evaporation process.

4. Electrodialysis (ED): ED uses an electric field to migrate ions in water, thereby separating salt and freshwater. In the electrolytic cell, the electric field between the anode and cathode causes positive and negative ions to move towards the two poles respectively, and fresh water is collected on the cathode side.

These technologies each have their own advantages and disadvantages, and are suitable for different water source conditions and needs. The continuous development of seawater desalination technology has provided effective solutions to the global water shortage problem.
