Chlorine gas is produced by Salt water electrolysis. The birth of electrolysis can be traced back to 1833. Faraday found through a series of experiments that when an electric current is applied to an aqueous solution of sodium chloride, chlorine gas can be obtained. The reaction equation is:

2NaCl+2H₂O ==2NaOH+H₂↑+Cl₂↑

Later, British scientist Watt also discovered this method and obtained a British patent in 1851 for the production of chlorine gas. However, due to the lack of practical DC generators to generate sufficient current at that time, the electrolysis method could only remain on a laboratory scale and could not be put into industrial production, thus being shelved. It was not until the 1870s to 1980s that good DC generators emerged and electrolysis was widely used. From then on, the industrial production of chlorine gas entered a new era. However, at that time, the electrode used for electrolysis to produce chlorine gas was mercury, resulting in a considerable amount of mercury vapor mixed in the chlorine and hydrogen gas obtained by electrolysis. This “mercury based chlorine method” poses great environmental hazards, so the new “ion exchange membrane method” for producing chlorine gas is more environmentally friendly and energy-saving. Mercury based chlorine production is the mainstream method for producing chlorine gas. For example, in 2010, China had 46% of chlorine gas, and in 2000, 50.1% of chlorine gas in Western Europe was produced using this method.
