Electrodialysis: In this method, an electric field is applied across a stack of ion exchange membranes. The ions in the seawater are then selectively removed by the membrane to produce fresh water. These methods are energy-intensive and costly, so a combination of energy-efficient technologies and renewable energy is often used to make desalination more sustainable. Desalination has its advantages, such as providing a reliable source of clean water for water-scarce regions. However, it also has some disadvantages, including high cost, environmental impact of brine discharge and potential negative impact on marine life. Therefore, it is important to consider the overall sustainability and environmental impact of large-scale desalination projects.
